Local socioeconomic situation: |
Population: Milton Keynes (MK) is often characterised as a young city. MK has a higher than average proportion of children and young people than other areas, for example in South East and England & Wales. People of retirement, on the other hand make up a much smaller than average proportion of MK population. Ethnicity: MK's relatively high proportion of ethnic groups have mainly Asian or Asian British background. Income: The household income data indicates that MK is situated in a relatively affluent area. There are pockets of deprivation, though. Unemployment: Claimant count unemployment currently stands at 1.7% in MK, (Aug 2004). The rate remains relatively low at below 2% and there is nolack of employment opportunities within the area, so it seems unlikely that unemployment will become a major issue for MK in the foreseeable future. Deprivation: MK has pockets of deprivation, principally affecting the wards of Woughton and Eaton Manor, and these need to be addressed by a targeted approach looking at particular issues within these localities. |
